The Tshwane Metro Police Department have introduced a new “Alcohol Bus” that will be used in Tshwane to check for motorists who are driving under the influence of alcohol.

The bus was launched on the R80 Mabopane Highway on 18 October 2023 as part of the Transport month initiative.

The bus is a multipurpose vehicle that will also function as a mobile alcohol Centre during operations. Some officers have undergone training to operate the bus that will also be used to check for outstanding traffic fines.

The Bus is equipped with advanced testing equipment, enabling swift and accurate alcohol tests for motorists.

“I am pleased to announce that the City of Tshwane is taking significant steps to priorities road safety and combat the serious challenge of drunk driving with the introduction of the Mobile Alcohol Evidence Bus,” MMC Theunissen said.

He said the Mobile Alcohol Evidence Bus will be deployed throughout the Tshwane municipality.

Theunissen said “The initiative is a direct response to the alarming prevalence of drunk driving in our communities, which has devastating consequences for individuals and their families.

Therefore, the mobile bus aims to deter and prevent individuals from putting themselves and others at risk by driving under the influence. Safety on our roads is a shared responsibility, and the success of this initiative depends on strong collaboration between law enforcement, local communities, businesses and civil society”.

“I would like to plead with motorists not to drink and drive and residents are also encouraged to report hotspots for drunk driving to the TMPD, and I want to warn all drunk drivers in Tshwane that your days on our roads are numbered, as our alcohol bus is coming for all of you,” he said.

One of the motorists who was driving on the R80 on the day of the launch Lesego Mojapelo said she is very happy with the alcohol bus and it will help a lot and it will reduce the accident on the roads and especially during the weekend.
