NotInMyName International President
Today, as the world observes Nelson Mandela International Day under the theme “It’s still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity”, NotInMyName International joins millions across the globe in honouring the life and legacy of a man who dedicated his existence to justice, peace, democracy, and human rights.
Mandela taught us that the struggle for freedom is not a passive endeavor. He said, “The struggle is my life.
I will continue fighting for freedom until the end of my days.
“These words remind us that the fight against injustice whether poverty, gender-based violence, or the marginalisation of the vulnerable is a daily calling that rests in our hands.
As a social justice movement rooted in the principles of human rights, access, participation, and equity, NotInMyName International has long understood that meaningful change can not be left to politicians alone.
“Today is not about your political views because the politicians have failed all of us,” our President Themba Masango has previously stated.
“As we commemorate Mandela Day, let us hear the cries of those that have lost, and more especially, the cries of those that have never had anything at all.”
This Mandela Day, we call on every citizen to embrace active citizenship. Giving 67 minutes of your time is a start, but the spirit of Mandela demands more—it demands that we stand up against social injustices, that we protect the vulnerable, and that we build communities where no one is left behind. Our organisation remains committed to uplifting, empowering, and protecting community members across all nine provinces of South Africa and beyond.
Madiba’s legacy is not a relic of the past—it is a living mandate.
It is in our hands now. Let us honor him not with words alone but with action that transforms lives and builds a South Africa worthy of his sacrifice.
