The introduction of an electric minibus taxi into South Africa’s public transport sector is offering an early glimpse into what could become a significant transformation of the country’s taxi industry.

The initiative took place on Thursday, 20 August 2026, at Johannesburg La Rochelle, where one of Gauteng’s oldest taxi associations hosted its annual general meeting.

The event provided an important platform to introduce the association’s leadership and members to an alternative form of public transport powered by electricity.

The taxi association has a membership of more than 600 members and operates a fleet of over 800 minibus taxis.

Like the majority of vehicles currently operating in South Africa’s taxi industry, these vehicles rely on internal combustion engines, contributing to carbon emissions and air pollution.

The introduction of an electric minibus taxi therefore represents more than simply a new vehicle.

It forms part of a broader conversation about how South Africa can modernise its public transport system while supporting cleaner and potentially more cost-effective modes of mobility.

The initiative is particularly significant in the context of the national government’s green transport policy and efforts to reduce the environmental impact of the transport sector.

Electric taxis could, over time, provide the industry with an alternative that potentially reduces operating costs while contributing to cleaner urban environments.

However, the transition remains in its early stages.

Significant questions still need to be addressed around affordability, charging infrastructure, vehicle availability, maintenance, financing and whether electric vehicles can meet the demanding operational requirements of the minibus taxi industry.

Ikamva Consultants is currently driving efforts to raise awareness about electric public transport and expose key players in South Africa’s transport industry to the possibilities presented by electric taxis.

Through engagements with taxi associations and industry stakeholders, the organisation is seeking to demonstrate the potential importance of electric vehicles in the future of public transportation.

The presentation at the association’s annual general meeting was consequently an important awareness-building exercise.

Beyond introducing a new vehicle, it created an opportunity for industry leaders to engage with technology that could eventually reshape how commuters move across South African cities and townships.

For the taxi industry, which remains a critical component of South Africa’s public transport network, the emergence of electric minibus taxis could represent an important step towards modernisation.

While it is too early to determine the scale at which electric taxis will ultimately be adopted, the initiative provides an opportunity for government, taxi associations, manufacturers, financiers and other industry stakeholders to begin considering the practical requirements of a transition towards cleaner transportation.

The electric minibus taxi is therefore still at the beginning of its journey in South Africa.

Its significance lies not only in the vehicle itself, but in opening a national conversation about the future of public transport and whether the country can build a taxi system that is simultaneously accessible, economically sustainable and environmentally responsible.
