The Menlyn Taxi Association has expressed satisfaction regarding the way the City of Tshwane has so far responded to its demands which they delivered at Tshwane House last week.

Speaking to Tshwane Talks on Tuesday at the Municipality’s headquarters Tshwane House, the taxi association’s member Jabulani Johannes Skosana said this time around the municipality accepted them in a professional manner and that they were happy about the municipality’s willingness to resolve the long-standing impasse between the two parties.

“The municipality has indicated that there were some processes which had to be followed, and I hope that will be done in due course before our demands are fully met,” said Skosana.

He said they therefore hope for the best as the MMC for Roads and Transport has promised them that everything will be done smoothly.

He explained that the time frame for the municipality to accede to their demands us between now and December.

Skosana said all taxi drivers will be happy about the municipality’s resolve to engage them the way it did and that all of them will be paid monies that are long overdue to them by the municipality.

The dispute between the City of Tshwane and the Menlyn Taxi Association stems from the municipality’s decision to introduce its A Re Yeng buses on taxi routes that are used by members of the association without compensating them for the losses that they have suffered since 2013.

The routes in question are the ones from the Pretoria CBD to Hatfield.

According to the taxi operator’s association, what made worse was that in 2016 the municipality also out it’s A Re Yeng buses on the Menlyn Taxi route, again without compensation and this scenario affected their business operations negatively.

The money owed by the City of Tshwane to the Menlyn Taxi Association is believed to be millions of rand.
