The third installment of the annual Dlalisa Moyeni Fellowship Day held at the Muckleuneck Soccer Grounds in Mamelodi on Sunday was a resounding success once again like in previous years.
The aim of the fellowship day is to honour South Africa’s football legends.
while at the same time equipping young, up and coming soccer stars with skills that would put them in good stead going forward in their careers.
The fun-filled day saw under 13, 15 and 17 boy soccer teams taking part in knockout games designed for their respective ages.
And to round off the day’s festivities, two specially- selected teams of legends,one captained by former Orlando Pirates captain Edward Motale and the other captained by former Mamelodi Sundown’s captain Themba ” The Rock” Mnguni – played against each other in an exhibition match that enthralled those who were in attendance while bringing back old memories for both the players and the fans.
Among the legends that took part in the exhibition match were Motale and Mnguni together with Doctor Khumalo formerly of Kaizer Chiefs, Thulasizwe ” Juju” Mbuyane formerly of Orlando Pirates, Sphiwe Shabalala and Lucas ” Rhoo” Radebe both formerly of Kaizer Chiefs, Teko Modise and George Lebese both formerly of Mamelodi Sundowns.
Former football administrator and also SAFA vice president Ria Ledwaba was also in attendance together with several VIPs from the government.
Dlalisa Moyeni Foundation’s chairperson Bongani Skosana told Tshwane Talks that he believes using sports for social development and change is a fantastic way to achieve greater happiness, empowerment and equality in society.
“But most importantly for me is the fact that our boys, who are the future football stars, received mentoring and coaching from their legendary heroes,” said Skosana.
Themba Mnguni’s team beat Edward Motale’s team 2-0 in a game filled with laughter, fun and jests.
