The Speaker of Council in the City of Tshwane, Cllr Mncedi Ndzwanana joins the rest of the nation in commemorating Youth Day.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the June 16 Soweto Uprising, when young people
courageously took to the streets to challenge the injustices of the apartheid regime and demand a better future.

Many paid the ultimate price in the struggle for freedom and democracy, laying
the foundation for the rights and freedoms we enjoy today.

As we reflect on this historic milestone, we are reminded of our collective responsibility to confront the challenges that continue to affect young people across our country.

Issues such as youth unemployment, inequality, poverty, and other social challenges remain a reality for millions
of young South Africans.

50 years after the Soweto Uprising and more than three decades into our democracy, we must acknowledge that there is still much work to be done.

Youth Day should not only be a moment of
remembrance, but also a call to action to strengthen our commitment towards building a society where young people have access to skills development and meaningful economic participation.

The best way to honour the legacy of the class of 1976 is to ensure that today’s youth are supported, empowered, and equipped to become active participants in shaping the future of our country.

Happy Youth Day!
