South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) Greater Tshwane Region is tired of being the ANC’s” step child.”
This was made abundantly clear at a media briefing held in Tshwane on Friday.
“SANCO is not a step child of the Alliance and SANCO must not only be acknowledged during elections but also on other significant issues or strategic choices within the Alliance,” said SANCO in a statement read at the media briefing by Deputy Regional Secretary Nqobile Kgomo.
“Gone are the days when only a privileged few benefited from the fruits of democracy whereby only certain individuals are deemed worthy of being employed in high positions,” said Kgomo in the aforesaid statement.
“SANCO is the vanguard of society as it has the capacity and prerequisites to take on any roles within the Municipality or at any level in the public service; having made sacrifices that demonstrate loyalty, courage and belief in the values of our struggle,” said Kgomo.
According to the read statement, SANCO rejects any “backdoor” setups or agreements that lead to the positional advancement of personal political agendas.
Kgomo said failure by the Alliance to discourage any actions that serve selfish political motives to the detriment of effective public service or the Alliance’s unity would mean that the Alliance would have failed its communities.
In his remarks at the start of the media briefing SANCO chairperson Fire Mashao said the briefing not only served the purpose of informing the public, but also served as a platform to engage the community and reaffirm SANCO’s role as the voice of the community that it serves.
“SANCO is rooted in activism, accountability and social justice,” he said.
In essence SANCO decries what it calls insufficient deployment and lack of recognition of its members, and according to SANCO this is an embarrassment to it.
It has emerged that SANCO reached out to the ANC on 13 October 2025 through a letter wherein it emphasised that its leaders must receive the same respect shown to other ANC leagues and coalition partners.
“There are political parties which pretend to be collaborating with the ANC while in fact they are simultaneously aiming to weaken the ANC’s influence within local communities,” read SANCO’s statement.
