The Food and Allied Workers Union (FAWU) members employed at Lucky Star embark on protected strike action in response to the employer’s unilateral and unjust actions that undermine workers’ rights and union representation.

Lucky Star management has, without consultation or agreement, removed the
full-time shop steward position and dismantled the designated union office at the workplace.

This move represents a direct attack on organized labour and the ability of workers to be effectively represented in matters affecting their employment and welfare.

In addition, the employer has unilaterally withdrawn the seasonal allowance previously granted to workers and replace it with a 13th cheque which is inferior to the seasonal allowance.

Safe to say that the seasonal allowance forms a critical component of the members income and it is also appreciative of the unique demands of seasonal labour in the fishing industry.

This decision was made without engaging FAWU or affected employees, violating principles of fair labour practice and collective bargaining.

FAWU views these actions as a blatant disregard for the Labour Relations Act
and the spirit of social dialogue.

The union has exhausted all avenues for
resolution, including formal engagement and conciliation processes.

As a result, our members have no choice but to exercise their constitutional right to strike.

The strike will commence on the 19th of August 2025 at 11h00 sharp, and will
involve over 1,200 workers inclusive of permanent and seasonal workers from
Lucky Star and Amawandle Pelagic Fishing companies, who are united in their demand for the following:

1.Reinstatement of the full-time shop steward position, the reopening of the
same union office in the workplace.

2.Restoration of the seasonal allowance with immediate effect.

FAWU calls on the public, media, and all stakeholders to support the workers in
their fight for dignity, representation, and fair compensation.
