Gauteng MEC for Finance and Economic Development Lebogang Maile address members of the media on Thursday at the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, Johannesburg CBD.

MEC Maile used the Media Briefing to respond to audit outcomes of Gauteng municipalities.

The Gauteng province, the nerve-Centre of the South African economy, has eleven (11) municipalities in total, of which three (3) are Metropolitan municipalities, one (1) district municipality and seven (7) local municipalities.

Gauteng MEC for Finance and Economic Development Lebogang Maile addressing the media said the auditor-general, Tsakani Maluleke recently, found a number of common problems, such as irregular, wasteful, and unauthorised spending, difficulties managing expenditures, and substantial inaccuracies or limitations in the annual financial statement submission.

The Midvaal Municipality was the only municipality in Gauteng to receive an unqualified audit opinion with no findings for the 2022 / 2023 financial year.

Maile pointed out that there has been discernible improvement in spite of these problems.

Municipalities were looking into instances of wasteful, irregular, and unapproved spending.

“The Gauteng Provincial Treasury welcomes the audit outcomes of the 2022/23 financial year
recently tabled by the Auditor General of South Africa (AGSA),” said MEC Maile.
