City of Tshwane and the Norwegian government officials launched a reverse recycle vending machine that gives a voucher to the person who throws an empty plastic bottle in it.
The launched was held at Tshwane House on Wednesday.
The machine is fun and simple to use.
The vending machine will be place in various shopping complex, filling stations so that people can have access of recycling.
Among the guest were city of Tshwane Mayor Cilliers Brink, Deputy Minister of foreign affairs Andreas Kravik, Ambassador of Norwegian Gjermund Saether, MMC of Environment agriculture and management Ziyanda Zwane.
Executive Mayor of the City of Tshwane Cilliers Brink said “we have a problem with waste in the country because we still using the old system of putting waste into landfills while the rest of the world recycles their waste and using that as a form of wealth creation.
The plan is to roll them out across the city. This is important as Tshwane is currently implementing its waste collection catch up plans.
“I believe this reverse vending machine is the solution to solving waste in the city and to the country,” Mayor Brink said.
he said this partnership is just the beginning. The city of Tshwane does not have money to put one of these things in every supermarket but it an idea that if we launch it properly and we learn a lesson it could be scale in different places.
MMC of environment and agriculture management Ziyanda Zwane says this is part of the climate action plan.
“The City of Tshwane will have a carbon resilient city. So, this is one of the visions that we need to embark on to make sure we manage our waste,” he said.
The vending machine will be placed in various shopping complex, filling stations so that people can have access of recycling.
“This vending machine tick all the boxes it is environmentally friendly, smarts, make a profit, fun and also it is an example of how we need to work,” Deputy minister of foreign affairs in Norwegian Andreas Kravik.
