As the City of Johannesburg prepares for the upcoming Workers’ Day long weekend, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) is issuing a firm reminder to all road users to prioritise safety and strictly follow the rules of the road.

With an expected rise in traffic volumes on our city’s main routes and freeways, our main aim is to ensure that every resident and visitor reaches their destination safely.

To this end, the JMPD will be out in full force with increased visibility and zero tolerance for lawlessness.

Alcohol remains one of the leading causes of road accidents in Johannesburg. There is no “safe” limit.

If you plan to drink, make sure you have a designated driver or use e-hailing services.

JMPD will operate strategic roadblocks across the city throughout the weekend.

Anyone caught driving while over the legal limit will be arrested immediately.

Speeding greatly reduces your reaction time and worsens the impact of any crash.

Stick to the posted speed limits.

Arriving a few minutes late is far preferable to not arriving at all.

Safe driving involves more than just obeying speed limits, it’s about your behaviour towards other road users.

Avoid aggressive driving, illegal overtaking, and using mobile phones while driving.

Check that your vehicle is roadworthy, inspect your brakes, tyres, and lights before starting your journey.

Pedestrians are the most vulnerable on our roads.

They must only cross at designated crossings and avoid walking on freeways, which is strictly forbidden.

Drivers are advised to be extra cautious near residential areas and informal settlements.

JMPD units will be stationed across the city to monitor traffic flow and respond to incidents.

We are committed to making this long weekend safe, but it depends on us all. Road safety is a collective responsibility.

We call on all residents to lead by example.

Let us show respect for the law and for each other to prevent unnecessary tragedies on our roads.
