Urgent Need for Adequate Equipment to Handle Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Police Stations

By Musa Mbewe

Dear Commissioner

We write to you on behalf of ActionSA Gauteng Women’s Forum [Ithemb’elisha] to express our deep concern regarding the current state of police stations across the country in handling Gender-Based Violence (GBV) cases.

The alarming statistics and the urgent need for action necessitate immediate
attention and your intervention.

Current Situation:

According to the latest crime statistics, South Africa has recorded a staggering number of GBV cases.

Demands:

1. Adequate Equipment: Ensure that all police stations are adequately equipped with necessary resources, including forensic kits, medical supplies, and secure facilities for survivors.

2. Training – Implement comprehensive training programs for police officers on handling GBV cases with sensitivity and efficiency.

3. Specialised Units – Establish specialised GBV units within police stations to handle these cases with the expertise and care they require.

4. Public Awareness – Increase public awareness campaigns to educate communities on GBV and the resources available for survivors.

5. Collaboration: Foster collaboration between police departments, healthcare providers, and NGOs to create a holistic support system for GBV survivors.

Request for Feedback:

We kindly request that you provide feedback on the steps being taken to address these demands within the next 7 days.

Your prompt response will be greatly appreciated as it will help us in our ongoing efforts to support and protect the most vulnerable members of our society.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.
