Operation Shanela was enforced in Sunnyside under the coordination of the District Commissioner of Tshwane, Major-General Samuel Thine, in collaboration with multiple stakeholders on Thursday.
The operation led to the arrest of 335 suspects for various offenses.
This highly successful operation, which involved the participation of multiple law enforcement agencies and community organizations, aimed to target unlicensed firearms, trace wanted suspects, and conduct compliance inspections at liquor establishments.
During the first phase of the operation, Tshwane Detectives arrested 309 suspects for serious offenses, including 95 for gender-based violence, 1 for murder, 4 for attempted murder, 7 for armed robbery, and 5 for rape.
Additionally, 34 undocumented immigrants were detained pending legal proceedings and will face deportation if found to be in contravention of immigration laws.
As part of the operation, 820 individuals were inspected, 485 vehicles were checked, and 9 vehicles were tested to verify whether they had been stolen.
A total of 15 targeted premises were searched.
During these searches, one suspect was arrested for drug possession and dealing, with 46 ziplock sachets of drugs found in his possession.
Several business premises selling cellphone accessories were inspected, leading to the confiscation of 250 counterfeit items worth R260,000.
Furthermore, 15 additional premises were patrolled and searched as part of high-visibility actions.
The Department of Health visited 8 shops, closing 2 and issuing fines amounting to R25,000 to 6 others for non-compliance with health regulations.
In terms of traffic enforcement, 233 fines totaling R100,600 were issued.
