Grandi Theunissen FF Plus leader in Tshwane
By Grandi Theunissen,
VF Plus Caucus Leader
The Freedom Front Plus (VF Plus) supports the motion of no confidence in the Speaker based on principle, not opportunism. Our commitment to procedural integrity, accountability, and the rule of law is the cornerstone of our decision.
This support is independent of the Democratic Alliance (DA) and is further reinforced by the following considerations:
The Compromised Integrity of the Speaker’s Office
The Speaker, Mncedi Ndzwanana of the ATM, has through his actions undermined
the principles of impartiality and orderly council management.
Repeated failures in applying council rules, selective enforcement of procedures, and the suppression of valid points of order have led to a serious breach of trust.
VF Plus’s Historic Role in the Pursuit of Accountability
The VF Plus acted proactively when the previous coalition had serious doubts about the Speaker’s conduct.
We initiated legal steps to ensure institutional accountability, despite the financial burden.
At the time, ActionSA refused to contribute to the legal costs, which were later carried by the VF Plus and the DA. Nevertheless, ActionSA later decided to independently pursue similar legal action—a move that highlights
their unreliable and wavering approach.
ActionSA’s Strategic Reversal
It is particularly concerning that ActionSA now forms part of the same governing coalition as the Speaker, alongside the ANC and the EFF.
This 180-degree turnaround follows their earlier legal action against the Speaker and raises questions about their policy consistency and commitment to good governance.
The current political opportunism, disguised as coalition discipline, cannot be endorsed by the VF Plus.
Principled Independence
The VF Plus’s support for the motion does not stem from political strategy, but from a moral obligation to the community and the council.
We will not remain silent where procedural misconduct persists or is justified for political reasons.
Even amid shifting alliances, our voice remains one of consistent integrity.
