The South African Police Service (SAPS) has alerted all motorists who drive cars that are in the make of NP 200 Nissan bakkie to be cautious following several reported cases of cars of this design having been stolen recently.

Police believe there is a syndicate that specialises in stealing cars that are in the make of NP 200 Nissan bakkie.

A 40-year-old male suspect was arrested for car theft and an NP 200 Nissan bakkie was recovered.

He appeared in court on Monday 18 August 2025 where he was charged with possession of a stolen motor vehicle at corner Paul Kruger and Visage Street on Friday around midday.

He has been denied bail pending further investigations by the police.

“The man was arrested after two officers of the crime prevention unit spotted a white NP 200 Nissan bakkie being driven recklessly,” explained Pretoria Central Police Station Corporate Communications Officer Constable Thabang Nkhumise in a statement submitted to Tshwane Talks on Tuesday.

“When the driver noticed that the police were pursuing him, he inadvertently bumped the stolen car into a delivery van as he attempted to flee the scene and the car was cornered by the police and in the process of searching it they noticed broken implements therein,” he said.

“Upon arrival at the police station an identification parade/ verification was conducted and it was discovered that he had previously been arrested for numerous cases ranging from rape, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, possession of house-breaking implements, car hijacking as well as reckless and negligent driving in the past,” he said.

Nkhumise revealed that the accused had been acquitted in some of the said cases while in other instances cases against him had been withdrawn.

Nkhumise told Tshwane Talks that the Pretoria Central Police Station Commander Brigadier Hlengane Mashaba welcomed the arrest of the suspect and applauded the SAPS officers for their vigilance which led to the arrest of at least one suspect connected to recent criminal incidents whereby NP 200 Nissan bakkie vehicles were stolen, and believes that this might lead to the recovery of other stolen vehicles as well as the dismantling of the said syndicate.

“Brigadier Hlengane Mashaba has also called on all drivers in general to be cautious at all times and always park their cars at designated spaces, thus making sure that they are guarded,” said Nkhumise.
