RE: COMMUNITY SAFETY CONCERNS AND DEVELOPMENT ENQUIRY – HM PITJE STADIUM SITE , MAMELODI

I hope this letter finds you well.
I am writing as a concerned community member regarding the current condition of the HM Pitje Stadium site in Mamelodi.
1. Community Safety Concerns
The site, following the cost of R224 million just to bid and demolition by Gauteng province though the asset remains in ownership and custidianship of the City of Tshwane, has become a matter of serious concern for residents. It is currently:
– Being used as an illegal dumping area
– Overgrown with bushes and lacking maintenance
– Poorly secured, posing safety risks to nearby residents
These conditions have contributed to increasing fears around crime, environmental hazards, and general public safety.
2. Impact on the Community
The continued neglect of this landmark has had a negative impact on the community, including:
– Reduced sense of safety for residents, especially pedestrians
– Environmental and health concerns due to waste dumping
– Loss of a once-prominent sporting and community facility and no longer contributing to the local economy.
Mamelodi is a community rich in sporting talent and heritage, and the current state of the site does not reflect its potential.
3. Request for Intervention and Clarity
In light of the above, I respectfully request the Municipality to:
– Provide an update on the progress of Tender GPM 07 2025/26
– Outline immediate measures to secure and maintain the site
– Share timelines for the proposed redevelopment
– Engage the community on future plans for the site
4. Support for Development
While there is concern regarding commercialization, there is also a strong desire within the community to see the site developed into a functional and beneficial facility.
I encourage the city to prioritise:
– Community safety in the interim
– Transparent communication
– Inclusive development that benefits local residents
5. Conclusion
The current condition of the HM Pitje Stadium site is both a safety concern and a missed opportunity. I urge the city to take decisive action to address immediate risks while advancing long-term development plans.
