The City of Tshwane is prioritizing strengthening and maintenance of the bulk electricity network supplying Soshanguve area.
In the last five years, the City has
successfully completed three major substation projects, namely, the construction of Soshanguve JJ Substation, upgrading of Soshanguve Substation and refurbishment of IA 33/11kV Substation.
The City is committed on addressing the electricity supply interruptions affecting some customers in parts Soshanguve through effective
maintenance and replacing aging infrastructure.
In line with the City’s broader Soshanguve bulk electricity stabilization and expansion plans, the City has commenced, in September 2024, with the construction of a 10km
double circuit power line to link Soshanguve JJ Substation to the existing bulk electricity network.
The power line and JJ Substation will supply Soshanguve Block GG, HH, JJ, LL and NN.
The project is expected to be completed on 30 August 2026 and is currently progressing well.
MMC for Utility Services ,Cllr Frans Boshielo responsible for Energy and Electricity Business Unit is pleased to report that significant progress has been achieved to date towards the completion of the power line project, as follows:
•Achieved 45% overall progress towards project completion.
•Completed construction of 64 out of 134 required tower structure foundations.
•Assembled and installed 58 out of the 134 required tower structures.
•The contractor has placed orders for the remaining material, and all is expected to be delivered in the third quarter of the current Financial Year.
Upon completion of the power line project, the City will transfer 50% of
the load from IA 33/11kV Substation to JJ Substation.
Reducing the load at IA Substation will further stabilize the electricity supply to Soshanguve Block BB, DD and FF.
Furthermore, the City has allocated funds in the current financial year to replace the 11kV switchgear panels at Soshanguve W Satellite Substation.
The Substation was completely vandalized leading to large parts of the customers left without power during network faults and winter peak periods.
The project is expected to commence in
November 2025 and complete March 2026.
The multi -party coalition government will continue to monitor progress on both the Soshanguve 132kV overhead power line and W Satellite Substation projects to ensure the timely delivery and completion of all the activities on site.
The City is always committed to igniting service excellence.
