An upbeat City of Tshwane Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya marked the first anniversary of the Metro’s coalition government in a ceremony held at the Lucas van der Berg Stadium on Tuesday.

The Multi-Party coalition government in Tshwane came into being last year in October, when erstwhile mayor Cilliers Brink was ousted in a vote of no confidence in the City chambers.

Brink had all along being in charge of Tshwane as head of the coalition that featured parties like his own DA, Freedom Front Plus and ActionSA.

But ActionSA deserted the coalition and joined forces with the EFF and ANC to upstage Brink.

“Tshwane is the heart beat of our nation; it is the seat of government and diplomacy where discussions that shape South Africa are made,” said Moya as she addressed the crowd during the anniversary ceremony.

“In October 2024 when this coalition took office, Tshwane was in a crisis; the City’s finances were unstable after many years of unfunded budgets and debt was mounting with the City on the verge of defaulting on over R6.7 billion owed to Eskom,” enthused Moya.

She said for the first time in many years Tshwane has now tabled a fully-funded budget as it has reached and maintained a payment agreement with power utility Eskom.

“The City’s Eskom debt has been reduced from R6,7 billion to R5,6 billion,” revealed Moya.

“Service delivery is improving, roads are being resurfaced and repaired, even if it is not at the pace that we want,” she said.

Moya said Statistics South Africa’s latest Quarterly Labour Force Survey revealed that Tshwane has created 71 000 of the 83 000 new jobs in Gauteng over the past year.

“This is 85% of all new provincial jobs and is more than the combined job gains of Johannesburg, Ekurhuleni and Cape Town,” said an elated Moya.
