Various community-based organisations and individuals marked Mandela Day 67 minutes of service to the community by doing good for those in need.
#NotInMyName visited the Mamelodi Association for People with Disabilities in Mamelodi West, where they cut a cake in celebration of Mandela’s birthday and donated food, clothes and blankets to the disabled people living in the association’s premises.
The Centre’ Manager of the Mamelodi Association for People with Disabilities Gloria Mahlangu told Tshwane Talks that she is grateful for the support, love and donations they got from organisations like #NotInMyName, MOSAMU, Shoprite, Boxer and Avbob.
“We are happy to have the community supporting Centers such as ours and have come here to celebrate Mandela Day with people living with disabilities,” she said.
“We received in-kind donations like having our Centre painted, cleaned, being provided with food for the day and being handed clothes,” said Mahlangu.
She said now they know that there are people in Mamelodi who recognise the existence of the Centre and the work that they do.
Presently the Centre gives care to hundred beneficiaries ranging from 18 years and above.
She told Tshwane Talks that the Centre was established in 2003 and caters for people living with mental disabilities and also those who live with physical disabilities from Mamelodi and surrounding areas.
A letter of appreciation sent by Mahlangu to one of the organisation’s which helped out in the day’s celebrations at the Centre #NotInMyName, reads as follows: “The board committee, staff members and beneficiaries of the Mamelodi Association For People With Disabilities wishes to express sincere gratitude and thanks to #NotInMyName for your generous donation of groceries as well as men’s and women’s clothing because this kind of gesture ensured that the beneficiaries had a special day celebration Nelson Mandela Day.”
Evangelical Presbyterian Church minister in Mamelodi East Reverend Mayayise was at the Mamelodi East Old Age Home and told Tshwane Talks that his church members donated R10 000 worth of goods to the elderly citizens at the old age home.
“We are here to celebrate Nelson Mandela and we are happy that other people are also here to come and lend a hand to the old age home,” said Reverend Mayayise.
The EFF Mamelodi branch members were also at the old age home where they donated paints and helped with painting the premises and cleaning the premises.
“It’s heartwarming for us to embark on a community service project of this magnitude and giving back to those in need and the elderly residents here will surely appreciate the support and effort put forth by the ground forces of the EFF in Mamelodi,” said EFF leader Bongani Ramontja.
