Mamelodi-based karate instructor Godfrey Tabane of Kyokushinkai Kan Karate has expressed happiness regarding his charges’ performance at a tournament which was held recently at the German School just outside Mamelodi.

“We took ten of our karate students to the tournament and seven of them won trophies while three of them won consolation medals,” he enthused.

“I must say I am really happy about my boys because they worked tirelessly at the tournament to win at all costs,” he said.

Tabane told Tshwane Talks that on the 28 and 29 June he will be taking his boys to the SA Tournament which will be held at Kibler Park in Sandton.

“Those who attain positions one, two and three at the SA Tournament will have an opportunity to travel to Japan in November this year,” said Tabane.

He appealed to the community of Mamelodi to go to the tournament to support his charges and cheer them up.

He said he and his boys train at the local Beer Hall in Mamelodi West from Monday to Thursday at 5pm to 6.30 pm.

According to Tabane, Karate is very important in the lives of young people as the skills they acquire in this sporting code entail self-defense.

He said nowadays, like it was the case in the past, Karate is all about self-defense.

“Armed with these self-defense skills, the kids won’t be bullied in the streets and at school and this will boost their self-confidence and esteem,” explained Tabane.

“Karate also helps the kids to have self-discipline and not be wayward,” he said.

“I would like to encourage all parents to make sure that their kids take part in various sporting activities, not only Karate,” said Tabane as he pointed out there were sporting activities around Mamelodi at places like Beer Hall, YMCA, Ikageng Hall, Nellmapius and Central Grounds for those who like soccer.

“Our kids like hanging around in the streets but sports will take them off the streets and make them better people,” said Tabane.

The Mamelodi Kyokushinkai Kan Karate is under the auspices of Sensei Mandla Paul Ngobeni.
