The Greater Bronkhorstspruit Taxi Association (GBTA) and the Sakhile Ekangala Taxi Association (SETA) are urgently appealing for the immediate intervention of law enforcement agencies and relevant government departments following ongoing acts of intimidation and extortion that are crippling the local taxi industry in Bronkhorstspruit.
It has come to our attention that an ex-convict, recently released on parole, has been terrorising operators by forcibly collecting R30 per trip from hardworking taxi drivers and owners.
This illegal activity is depriving honest operators of their lawful income and has instilled fear among those who rely on this industry to provide for their families.
Despite numerous attempts by local leadership to engage with law enforcement, no effective action has been taken to date.
As a result, the situation on the ground has deteriorated, with operators fearing for their safety and the continued viability of their businesses.
GBTA and SETA strongly condemn these criminal acts and call upon
•The South African Police Service (SAPS) to prioritise this matter and deploy resources to protect the affected operators.
•The Departments of Transport, Community Safety, and the Department of Correctional Services to investigate the parolee’s conduct and take immediate corrective measures.
•Local government structures to assist in restoring order and ensuring a safe operating environment for the taxi industry in Bronkhorstspruit.
The taxi industry plays an integral role in the daily lives of millions of South Africans, and such acts of lawlessness threaten not only livelihoods but also public safety and community stability.
GBTA and SETA reaffirm their commitment to working with government and law enforcement to ensure that peace, safety, and fairness are restored in the industry.
