Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) councillors in the City of Tshwane have vowed to boycott all future meetings of the City of Tshwane Municipal council in order to visit areas that are negatively affected by lack of service delivery
“We are of the opinion that the City of Tshwane Municipality has abandoned our people in the townships of Tshwane.
Instead of attending the council meeting, we decided to come to Mamelodi in order to understand the problems facing residents here,” said City of Tshwane EFF chairperson Obakeng Ramabodu.
He said one of the things they have discovered as the EFF is lack of water in areas like Ward 15 and most people are frustrated about this situation, which according to him, has been persistent for many years now.
Ramabodu revealed that the EFF will mobilise the people of Mamelodi to go and protest outside mayor Cilliers Brink’s offices.
“These visits to communities who suffer due to lack of service will be an ongoing programme of all EFF Councillors until the elections.
Every time there is a Council meeting we will submit a leave of absence and go to attend service delivery issues in various communities,” said Ramabodu.
“There is no need to sit in Council and listen to people lying to the people of Tshwane,” explained Ramabodu.
Ramabodu was accompanied by 23 EFF Councillors on his visit to Mamelodi on Thursday.
Ramabodu told Tshwane Talks that the EFF is aware of thugs in Mamelodi who threaten residents.
“The EFF is not afraid of those thugs and won’t be intimidated from carrying out it’s duties as vanguards of the community.
The EFF is not a group of vigilantes or thugs, whereby if you kill the ring leader the group collapses.
Even if they kill an individual or leader of the EFF, other members will pick up the baton and continue with the ideas of the party.
“I urge people of Mamelodi not to be afraid of those thugs as the EFF is there to protect them,” he said.
Ramabodu made it clear that there can not be no-go areas in a democracy.
He said this in reference to warnings they received from some people to the effect that they as EFF councillors must not go to Mamelodi as it was dangerous to do so.
Besides visiting Ward 15 in Mamelodi, the EFF councillors also visited the Matimba Flats in Extension 5, Mamelodi East, where residents complained about poor living conditions there.
Ramabodu lamented the fact that residents of Matimba Flats are living under poor conditions.
“Residents complained about leaking roofs, falling windows, lack of water in their households and also in the communal taps,” said Ramabodu.
“We want to expose the DA and ActionSA and show that they can’t deliver services to the people but instead lie to the residents of Tshwane with empty promises,” he said.
Ramabodu announced that the EFF will on Sunday hold a meeting with residents of Mamelodi who are victims of the water crisis and other service delivery issues.
