The City of Tshwane’s Energy and Electricity Business Unit (EEBU) wishes to inform residents that a large 40 MVA power transformer was transported over on,
Friday, 24 July 2026, and Saturday, 25 July 2026, from the 132/11 kV Wolmer Substation to the 132/11 kV Mamelodi 2 Substation.
This emergency intervention forms part of the City’s ongoing implementation of the
Energy Stabilisation Plan, which is focused on strengthening critical electricity
infrastructure, improving network resilience and delivering a more reliable electricity supply to communities across Tshwane.
The transformer is being relocated to address recurring power trips affecting parts of Mamelodi and to increase capacity at the Mamelodi 2 Substation.
Once installed, tested and commissioned, it will restore network redundancy, improve operational flexibility and significantly reduce the risk of unplanned outages.
This investment in critical infrastructure will improve the stability and reliability of electricity supply for residents, businesses and public facilities served by the Mamelodi 2 Substation.
It also strengthens the City’s ability to respond to faults while supporting future growth in electricity demand.
The transportation of the transformer is expected to result in temporary traffic
disruptions along the designated route over the two-day period.
Motorists are requested to exercise caution, comply with the instructions of traffic officers and law enforcement officials, and make use of alternative routes where possible.
The City appreciates the patience and cooperation of residents and road users during this important operation.
While the transportation of a transformer of this size may cause temporary inconvenience, it represents a significant investment in strengthening electricity
infrastructure and improving the quality and reliability of service delivery.
Further details regarding the transportation route and estimated travel
times will be communicated once final logistical arrangements have been concluded.
