Cllr Nasiphi Moya
Executive Mayor of Tshwane
The City of Tshwane is aware of concerns regarding the quality of water currently supplied through the newly launched Klipdrift Magalies Water Package Plant and is working around the clock to resolve the issue.
This situation contrasts with the laboratory-tested water quality recorded in January 2025, when supply was first restored to Wards 49, 73, 74, and 75, specifically communities including Mandela Village, Marokolong, Ramotse, Kekana Gardens (Steve Bikoville), and Babelegi Industrial.
The City was first alerted to a water supply interruption at the Klipdrift Package Plant, operated by Magalies Water, on 5 February 2025 due to power disruptions. Initially, repairs were expected to be completed the same day.
However, Magalies Water later informed the City that additional work was required, with the estimated completion
date extended to 11 February 2025.
Following reports of deteriorating water quality, immediate steps were taken to flush the system to remove potential contaminants.
This process was completed on 12 February 2025, and water samples were subsequently sent for laboratory analysis.
The results are expected on 14 February 2025, and the City will provide residents with an update once the findings are available.
We acknowledge the frustration this has caused for residents and assure the community that addressing this challenge remains a top priority.
The City urges residents to refrain from consuming water from the system while laboratory testing is
underway.
We sincerely apologise to the residents of Hammanskraal for this unexpected setback and appreciate their patience as we work with Magalies Water to resolve the issue.
The Klipdrift Package Plant is being implemented in four phases, with completion expected in mid-2025. This project is a short-term intervention while the City advances a long-term solution through the refurbishment of the Rooiwal Wastewater Treatment Works (WWTW).
Working with the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) as the implementing agent, the Rooiwal upgrade is progressing ahead of schedule.
Phase 1A has been completed early, allowing Phase 1B to be brought forward by five months.
Originally planned for September 2025, Phase 1B will now begin in early 2025, with full completion of the project expected by June 2026.
Each completed phase of these projects will expand access to safe, reliable water for more communities in Hammanskraal.
The City remains committed to resolving this crisis and ensuring a sustainable water supply for all affected residents.
For further updates, residents are encouraged to follow official City communication channels.
