By Dr Nasiphi Moya
Executive Mayor of Tshwane
Today we celebrate an important milestone in the refurbishment and upgrade of the Wapadrand Substation, a project that marks real progress in restoring stability and strengthening electricity supply in the eastern parts of Tshwane.
The Wapadrand Substation was severely damaged by a fire in July 2021.
Since then, the City has undertaken a full rebuild to restore capacity, modernise infrastructure and significantly improve safety and reliability.
What we saw on site reflects steady and tangible progress.
This is a clear move toward a stronger and more resilient electricity network.
The project has an approved budget of just over R117 million.
To date, more than R97 million has been spent, representing 82.76% of the total allocation.
Overall progress is at approximately 90%, with the remaining work focused on final testing and commissioning before full handover.
Once complete, the upgraded substation will substantially improve supply reliability for households, schools and businesses in Equestria, Faerie Glen, Lombardy, Silver Lakes, Six Fountains and surrounding areas.
These improvements will reduce the risk of outages and support continued residential stability and economic activity in Pretoria East.
This investment reflects how we govern. As a Multiparty Coalition Government, we
are committed to serving every community in Tshwane with the same seriousness
and intent.
Whether in townships, informal settlements, the inner city or more
established suburbs, our responsibility is the same.
Residents across Tshwane deserve dependable services, safe infrastructure and a City that delivers fairly and
consistently.
The work at Wapadrand forms part of a broader programme to stabilise electricity supply across the eastern corridor of the City.
It demonstrates focused planning, sustained investment and a commitment to long term reliability rather than short term fixes.
I thank residents and businesses for their patience during the construction period.
The progress achieved here shows a City that is rebuilding with purpose and
delivering the resilient electricity network Tshwane needs to grow and thrive.
