The City of Tshwane, in partnership with the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT), hosted a successful three-day Varsity Hackathon which saw over 646 applications.
The challenge involved participants from the following higher education institutions: TUT, University of Pretoria, Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University and University of South Africa.
This is the third year that the City of Tshwane has partnered with TUT for this challenge.
The Varsity Hackathon aims to stimulate the creative minds of varsity students to come up with innovative solutions to complex problems or challenges.
The problems provided to the students at the weekend included a question as to how best the City’s Community and Social Development Services Department can best advertise its tourism centres. Another challenge dealt with creating a system that would help record embedded generation applications.
The Varsity Hackathon was hosted at the Tshwane Leadership and Management Academy.
Within three days, the selected participants, who were narrowed to 123, were divided into groups of five to eight and they were given the weekend to solve the challenges.
With only a few hours on hand to solve the challenges, I was impressed with the solid
solutions that the groups presented.
The final winners will present their solutions at an award ceremony to be held at Tshwane House on 1 November 2024.
