As the City prepares to host the 2025 Urban20 Mayors’ Summit, I am calling on
residents to join our tree-planting campaign by collecting trees from our depots to plant in gardens or public spaces.
At the weekend, I joined residents of Ga-Rankuwa, at Bokamoso Care Centre, to plant 20 trees in honour of Tshwane’s commitment to nature-based strategies for offsetting carbon emissions.
The impact of climate change is experienced by all citizens, and it is time we do more to show we are serious about circumventing its impact through sustainable solutions.
Three years ago, South Africa committed to planting 5 million trees in 5 years as of part of global efforts to combat carbon emissions. Tshwane’s share of that commitment is 300,000 trees.
We have a long way to go in our efforts to honour this commitment. This is why I have set a target that we need to at least plant 30,000 trees in Tshwane by December 2025.
I am appealing to residents, businesses and organisations to help us reach this goal.
We have hundreds of trees available for collection through the City’s Environment and Agriculture Management Department.

On 12-14 June 2025, the City of Tshwane will welcome international delegates for the U20 Sherpa meeting and Africa Mayors’ Assembly.
The tree planting initiative will also be extended to the delegates as it
represents our united call for action to protect the earth and help
maintain our climate and biodiversity.
