ARMCHAIR CRITIC: IF BROOS DOESN’T BELIEVE MOFOKENG IS OUR TRUMP CARD, THEN WHO IS?

If “hard of hearing” Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos thinks Relebogile Mofokeng is not our trump card at the 2026 World Cup tournament, then who is?

This coach, who comes from Belgium, didn’t field Mofokeng in the first game of the tournament of the World Cup against Mexico with the whole football-loving international community watching.

Damn you Hugo Broos!

All international soccer scouts were watching that game and you stupidly denied Mofokeng a chance to be seen and assessed by all people who love football in this world.

Anyway, what can one expect from Hugo Broos who was a run-of-the-mill, often substituted or not fielded at all player for his own country Belgium during the 1986 World Cup tournament in Mexico?

This Hugo Broos is “a non-winner of matches” and a draw for him is an achievement akin to being in the Biblical paradise.

And a win for him would actually feel like he is sitting in heaven on the right hand side of God; something out of this world and very supernatural indeed, and impossible to achieve.

Broos clearly does not know that his mandate is to win games at the World Cup tournament and that it is not to draw matches or lose games by “slight margins” of 2-0 against ordinary teams like hosts Mexico.

Once Mofokeng came in as a substitute in the game against Czechia, the whole world could see that Czechia was there for the taking; that if Mofokeng had started the game we would have easily beaten Czechia.

Mofokeng subjected the Czechia players to torture with his township-inspired “show me your number” technique, which entails faking to kick the ball hard at an advancing opponent, resulting in the opponent being compelled to hide their faces and turning their backs towards him in fear of being blasted by the ball.

Now each and every self- respecting team has or has had its own trump card since time immemorial: Argentina have Messi, Brazil used to have Pele, England used to have Gaza Gascoigne and Bafana have Mofokeng, but coach Broos is in denial about the fact that Mofokeng is our star; that he can mesmerise the opposition and help us win games.

In the opening game against Bafana, hosts Mexico fielded their 17-year-old protege Gilberto Mora in the 65th minute, and at that time one would have thought Broos would throw in Mofokeng.

But alas, that was not to be.

Broos instead fielded some defensive-minded players so that the score would remain a “respectable 2-0 loss” instead of 10-0 against us.

Bafana Bafana went into the match against Czechia on the back of a 2-0 defeat at the hands of a mediocre Mexican national team.

Now against Czechia, all reasonable people thought Broos would go all the way to attack, but alas, “the hard of hearing ” chap decided to again start the game with three defensive midfielders in the form of Thalente Mbatha, Tebogo Mokoena and Jayden Adams.

Can these defensive midfielders win us games?

No, they won’t, because all that they do is to be on the pitch and mark some imaginary opponents who are known only to them and coach Hugo Broos, this as we get scored even when they happen to be there in numbers, thus making it difficult to see what their purpose is as defensive midfielders.

Among these defensive midfielders Tebogo Mokoena is the only one who deserves to be fielded while the rest of them should actually be sitting on the bench and help us watch the game.
