The Afrika Mayibuye Movement (Mayibuye) is appalled by the recent disclosures indicating that the City of Tshwane has
squandered millions of Rands on purchasing water rather than supplying piped water to the residents of the Capital.
Recent sources indicate that the City of Tshwane expended an extraordinary R777 million on water tankers supplying water to Tshwane townships during the 2024/2025 financial year, ending in
June 2025.
The artificial water problem has caused the City to exceed its budget by an astonishing R457 million, thereby
jeopardising the financial statements during the upcoming audit.
Remarkably, in the 2023/24 Financial Year, the City allocated R105
million for tanked water.
Such an escalation of R672 million within a span of 12 months is indefensible.
Mayibuye denounces the audacious exploitation of the City’s financial resources to benefit contractors associated with some City officials.
Mayibuye contends that these funds could
have been more effectively used towards the construction and renovation of the city’s water infrastructure to mitigate the chronic water issues faced by the city.
It is unsurprising that the City of Tshwane is disinclined to develop
and enhance the water infrastructure, opting instead for the utilisation of water tankers to reap indirect benefits.
The City of Tshwane cannot simultaneously create a problem and offer a solution to the problem.
Mayibuye urges the inhabitants of the Capital to hold the City authorities and politicians accountable for this disaster.
As Mayibuye, we support the inhabitants of Tshwane during these challenging times when they are being used to benefit a select group of politicians and their associates.
We remind the City of Tshwane Officials that the provision of water is a constitutional entitlement of every person and cannot be used as a conduit to enrich the corrupt few.
The connections between water-tank proprietors and City authorities have been frequently discussed; however, the
substantial expenditure on water tankers lends credibility to the assertions that City officials are profiting from this arrangement.
Although outside the government, Mayibuye will persist in holding
the City of Tshwane accountable for the misappropriation and exploitation of the city’s resources.
In the current day and age, there is no justification for our people to rely on tanked water while having taps in their homes that are running dry.
The incompetence of the current ruling class has reached unprecedented levels.
We are observing another potential “Tembisa Hospital Saga,” but this
time it pertains to water.
Mayibuye denounces the Mayor of Tshwane, Dr. Nasiphi Moya, for permitting this situation to occur under her watch.
