Newly appointed MMC for Finance Eugene Modise admitted that the controversial Tshwane Ya Tima initiative is actually an ANC concept, but that the DA-led administration implemented it improperly.

Tshwane Ya Tima entails cutting off water and electricity of those who are indebted to the City of Tshwane due to failure to osy for services rendered to them.

“When you have clients you must treat them like customers and we are going to talk to all clients who owe us and make payment arrangements so that they can pay on time, and right now we have lost many clients who are off the electricity grid,” said Modise.

“We are not going to tolerate illegal electricity and we are going to make sure that everybody has access to electricity including informal settlement dwellers as they are prepared to pay for electricity and must not be treated like criminals,” he said.

Modise revealed that the City of Tshwane will engage the National Treasury to ensure that the funds which the Municipal forfeited to the fiscus body are brought so that there can be money to implement projects in the City.

MMC for Community Safety Hannes Coetzee pointed out that the role of the Metro Police is threefold, namely road policing, community safety and bylaw enforcement.

“We can not allow a situation where foreigners are selling illegal foodstuffs that kill our children, and we are going to make sure that we embark on joint operations with the police to make sure that our city is safe,” said Coetzee.

He indicated that insourcing for cleaners will be implemented in January 2025 and that they are still waiting for a feasibility study from the University of Pretoria regarding the insourcing of security guards as costs have to be considered in this regard.

He revealed that a tender will be advertised for the rebuilding of the Pyramid electricity substation which was recently burnt down by as yet unknown arsonists.

SAMWU Gauteng Provincial Secretary Mpho Tladinyane told Tshwane Talks that the Union acknowledges the appointment of the new MMCs and election of the new mayor in the City of Tshwane.

“Top of the agenda in our engagement with the City of Tshwane will be the issue of 40 employees who were dismissed by former Mayor Cilliers Brink, outstanding salary increases and provision of tools of trade for municipal workers,” said Tladinyane.

“On Wednesday after being elected mayor I made a commitment to the residents of Tshwane that the work of restoring our Capital City would begin in earnest and I stand here today to fulfill that promise by announcing a Multi-Party Mayoral Committee dedicated to serving all residents of this city with commitment and determination,” said Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya at Tshwane House on Sunday while introducing her MMCs

“Together we will prioritise the following areas for revitalisation:

1.Safety and Security by enhancing public safety so that residents feel safe in their communities.

2.Economic Development by using initiatives such as the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) to create jobs and advance rural agricultural initiatives.
