Jubilant City of Tshwane Municipality security officers who up to now are still outsourced from the Metro’s workforce, toyi-toyied in joy outside Tshwane House after the Metro’s Council took a resolution on Thursday to insource 100 of them as permanent Municipal security officers.

The resolution to insource the 100 workers was taken after Councillors voted on the matter in the Council chambers on Thursday.

The Democratic Party and some parties voted against this motion while the EFF, ActionSA and ANC voted in its favour.

110 Councillors voted for the motion while 84 of them voted against it.

R36 million will be used to fund the insourcing of the said 100 security officers.

According to Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya, the said R36 million will be taken from the reduced budget for watchman services.

“We have been waiting for this day for ten years now and we are happy that Mayor Doctor Nasiphi Moya has given us 100 posts and we are now going to work as fully-fledged City of Tshwane Municipality security officers with all benefits related to the job,” said Hlengiwe Ngwenya, who is the spokesperson of security officers who have been outsourced to private companies/ labour brokers by the City of Tshwane Municipality.

The outsourced, battle-weary security officers have over the years used various means like petitions, night vigils and threats to get the City of Tshwane Municipality to insource them without success, and now that some of them will be insourced is, according to them, quite remarkable.
