Infamous attempted murder-accused Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala told the Parliamentary ad hoc committee that he was born and bred in Mamelodi East, where he was raised by a single mother.

He said he attended the local Lehlabile Secondary School where he obtained his Matric certificate.

“Thereafter I ventured into informal business; buying and selling goods but ended up being convicted for buying stuff that was illegal and sentenced to four years imprisonment which was converted to correctional supervision,” he said.

“In 2017 I formally registered my first business, which was a security services business and I ended up protecting clients regarding construction sites, schools as well as in the health care sector,” said Matlala.

The 49-year-old Matlala disclosed this information during his appearance before the ad hoc committee which is sitting at the Kgoshi Mampuru Correctional Centre so as to be in close proximity to him as he is an awaiting trial prisoner at the centre.

He revealed that he met KZN Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi in April this year at Umhlanga in KZN at a meeting arranged by former Minister of Police Bheki Cele.

The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the fact that his R360 million tender with the South African Police Service (SAPS) was being sabotaged from within the selfsame SAPS.

Matlala refused to give details of how he got to get the aforesaid SAPS tender as he feared incriminating himself.

Furthermore, he accused Bheki Cele of lying under oath and revealed that he paid Cele half a million rand in two separate installments and also transported him (Cele) and his wife to some wedding party.

Matlala also said he has lost memory of some incidents about which allegations were made against him, because he has been badly affected by the fact that he is presently in solitary confinement at the Kgosi Mampuru Correctional Centre, where he is awaiting trial for the attempted murder of his ex-girlfriend Tebogo Thobejane.

Matlala’s hearing at the ad hoc committee continues on Thursday and is scheduled to end on Friday.
