As part of a coordinated effort to improve the living conditions and service delivery for the residents of Region 1, the MMC for Housing and Human Settlements, Ald Aaron Maluleka, conducted an oversight visit to Letlotlo Informal Settlement in Ward 12 and
Thusanang Informal Settlement in Ward 21 in Mabopane on Monday, 25 August 2025.
Letlotlo informal settlement has 58 dwellings, while Thusanang informal settlement has 172 shacks.
The two informal settlements previously fell under the North West government, until they were recently integrated into Gauteng.
The residents have illegal water connections from the communal taps, use pit toilets, and have electricity connections from Eskom.

During the visit, Ald Maluleka highlighted that the Human Settlements Department has recently received the power of attorney to formalise the settlements and to bring in services for development.
He cautioned residents against selling their stands by means of an exchange of money and an affidavit, as the sale will not be recognised legally in the case of disputes.
Those who are interested in social houses or applying for Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) houses are encouraged to approach their regional municipal offices.
The criteria for registration on the National Housing Needs Register are as follows:
•The total household gross income should not exceed R15 000.
•Neither the applicant nor the spouse should ever have received any form of housing subsidy from the government.
•Neither the applicant nor the spouse should ever have owned a property before.
•The applicant must be a South African citizen or have permanent residency.
•The applicant must be older than 18 years, and can be married, widowed, divorced or single with dependents.
