358 SUSPECTS APPREHENDED DURING OPERATION SHANELA

On Thursday, 9 January 2025, the South African Police Service in Tshwane conducted Operation Shanela in the Mabopane and Loate policing precincts.

Under the leadership of Major-General Samuel Thine, District Commissioner of Tshwane, this operation continued with a multi-stakeholder approach, resulting in the apprehension of 358 individuals for various offenses.

The operation focused on key priorities, including the removal of unlicensed firearms, apprehension of wanted suspects, and enforcement of liquor license compliance.

During the first phase of the operation, Tshwane Detectives apprehended 306 individuals for serious offenses, including, 93 arrests for gender-based violence, 47 arrests for assault to inflict Grievous bodily harm, 6 for murder, 3 arrested for attempted murder, 4 arrests for armed robbery, and 1 arrest for rape.

40 undocumented individuals were detained and are awaiting legal processes for deportation.

6 suspects were arrested for possession and dealing in drugs, with 84 ziplock bags containing various substances and an undisclosed amount of cash were found in their possession with another suspect being arrested for dealing in scheduled medication when scheduled medication were found in his possession when he tried to sell the tablets.

During this operation, 1054 persons, 710 vehicles with 6 drug hotspots were patrolled searched.

155 AARTO infringement notices were issued by traffic officials, totaling R75 650 with 6 vehicles being impounded due to non-compliance with the Road Traffic Act.

Further, 18 premises and 18 liquor establishments were inspected with 6 liquor outlets closed and 240 773 ml of alcohol confiscated for non-compliance with the Liquor Act with 500 Illegal cigarettes also confiscated.

1 firearm was found recovered and investigations will be conducted to determine whether the firearm was used in crimes and the circumstances in which it was found.
