CITY OF TSHWANE FIREFIGHTERS RESPOND TO A BUS ACCIDENT ON THE R80 HIGHWAY NEAR THE N4 HIGHWAY IN PRETORIA NORTH

The City of Tshwane’s Emergency Services Department responded to a bus accident was reported to the Emergency Communication Centre (ECC) at about 08:40. The ECC immediately dispatched firefighting resources from Rosslyn Fire Station to the scene. These included a ladder and a district commander’s unit.

On arrival, the firefighters found that a bus and a light motor vehicle were involved in a collision. Four patients, including the bus driver, were in the bus, and three patients plus the driver, were in the light motor vehicle.

No one was trapped and the patients were treated on the scene for minor to critical injuries and later transported to different hospitals by private ambulances as follows:

 Lifecare Medics transported one patient with severe injuries to Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital.

 Life Star 911 Ambulance Service transported three patients, one with severe injuries and two patients with minor injuries to Netcare Akasia Hospital.

 Funcure Ambulance Service transported two patients, one with severe injuries and the other with critical injuries, to Netcare Akasia Hospital.

 The bus driver sustained critical injuries and was airlifted by Netcare Air Ambulance to Netcare Milpark Hospital.

The R80 Highway was closed completely on both the northbound and southbound directions, and traffic was rerouted to other alternative routes by the Tshwane Metro Police Department.

The South African Police Service was also on scene and assisted with incident management. The road was reopened at about 12:03.

The cause of the accident has not yet been determined.
