A group of MK Youth League supporters stormed the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) offices in Centurion, Tshwane on Friday.
This in demand of a letter from the IEC which declares that former president Jacob Zuma is eligible and qualified to stand as a candidate in the upcoming general elections later this year.
Last month the IEC announced that Zuma may not contest for the position of the country’s president as he had already served two terms.
Another factor which disqualified Zuma according to the IEC is that Zuma has been convicted of a crime and sentenced to jail time without an option of a fine.
“No Zuma no elections.
If IEC doesn’t write the letter as per our demand, then there won’t be any elections in this country,” fumed MK Youth League leader Bonginkosi Khanyile.
“We are prepared to kill or die for the country’s democracy,” said Khanyile.
Khanyile explained that they were at the IEC offices not to deliver a memorandum but to simply order the IEC to change its earlier statement and write a letter which says Zuma is fit to contest the upcoming general elections.
“We are giving the IEC seven days to do as we say.
Failure to do that would result in us coming back here with thousands and thousands of our supporters to drive our point home,” said the irritated Khanyile.
