Spain has won the 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament.
I knew that they will win.
And I told you so!
Good football has at last prevailed again since 2010 when Spain lifted the World Cup trophy in Soweto at the FNB Stadium.
By good football I mean attacking football whereby a team relies on its own strengths and talent rather than “studying” what the strengths of the opposition are.
As I said in my previous Armchair Critic column, those Spanish boys were going to ignore Messi….and they did!
Messi made no shots at goal and only made 9 useless passes and was very quiet throughout the game.
That is how a team must treat a demigod like Messi…ignore him and play your own football!
Football is a team sport and all people who thought Messi would win the World Cup tournament single-handedly for Argentina are misguided.
There is no team to speak of in that Argentina squad; they are palookas.
It is only Messi… Messi..and Messi alone.
Now my advice, or command rather to SAFA is that it must send its coaches to Spain to study the Spanish football philosophy and then modify it to suit our needs.
It is not a shame to “steal” good ideas.
The present Spanish football philosophy was “stolen” from Holland and perfected to suit the character and ability of the Spanish players.
Famous Holland captain Johaan Cruyf is the proponent of this style of play which in Spain is now called Tiki-Taka.
Now what I have realised about Spain is that they don’t field a player who is not naturally talented.
They play with stars!
Here in South Africa we still field untalented players like Siphephelo Sithole who can’t trap the ball and expect to win the World Cup.
