“The ACDP calls on the residents of Tshwane to practise strict hand hygiene and food safety to avoid contracting typhoid,” said ACDP Cllr Thabang Moshidi.
“Seek immediate medical attention if you develop a high fever with headache, fatigue, vomiting, stomach cramps and constipation or diarrhoea.
Complications of typhoid can be fatal, and there is a possibility that drug-resistant strains may develop.
“The ACDP notes that water supplied by the City is safe.
We call on CoT, however, to continue monitoring and evaluation of its municipal water and tanker water.
Health inspector visits to food outlets should also be stepped up.
“Furthermore, Hammanskraal water infrastructure must be completed as soon as possible; and challenges at Bronkhorstspruit Water Treatment Works must be addressed urgently.
Although the CoT water supply is not spreading typhoid, areas where taps do not always work will clearly be more susceptible to such illnesses.
Maintaining personal hygiene and food safety is always more difficult when families have to use buckets for bathing, flushing toilets, cleaning, cooking and so on.”
