The Democratic Alliance (DA) has learned with great sadness about the passing of Councillor Thabang Masemola, ward councillor of Ward 10, Mamelodi.

As the Chief Whip of the Official Opposition in the municipal council of the City of Tshwane, my caucus would like to extend our heartfelt condolences to the Masemola family and the African National Congress (ANC) Greater Tshwane Region.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this senseless act of violence.

These barbaric acts of violence must be condemned unequivocally, as they threaten the very foundations of peace and dignity.

Ward Councillors are amongst the most selfless public servants, going beyond the call of duty, sacrificing their private and family time to serve the community

The DA calls upon law enforcement to act swiftly to bring the perpetrators to book. Public trust in the South African Police Service (SAPS) has been deeply eroded due to years of corruption and unfulfilled promises.

Considering the recent allegations of corruption brought by Lieutenant-General Mkhwanazi, involving some of the country’s top-ranking officials, residents feel even more unsafe.

We demand justice for the Masemola family. Not only has a young politician been deprived of a promising career, but his family, Council and residents of Mamelodi are poorer for his loss.
